Art/science collaborations and performances at Columbia University Earth Institute’s annual grown-up science fair in the NY Pallisades.
The principal climate research campus of Columbia University’s Earth Institute, the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, hosts an annual grown-up science fair called Open House. We have the pleasure of creating customized events for Open House, in collaboration with LDEO scientists.

- 2011 — Charlie and the Trees
A boy wanders down a deserted road, searching for his vanished community. The trees surrounding him begin to speak, recounting the story of their lives. The boy is swept up in their dance of time and transformation, and a new journey has begun for him — but where does the road lead?
Created in collaboration with tree scientist Nicole Davi of the LDEO Tree Ring Lab, this original family-friendly event was inspired by historic instances of climate-related "cultural collapse" as discovered through dendrochronology (a.k.a. tree ring dating).
Written & Directed by Jeremy Pickard
Styled by R.B. Schlather
Produced by Lisa Phillips and Positive Feedback
Performed by Jon Erdman, Andrea Jordan, Charlie Kilgore, Alex Krasser, Hannah Wolf, and Anne Zager
- 2010 — Flash Performances
Our inaugural Open House was a guerrilla theater experiment. Inspired by the Open House ’10 theme of natural disasters, SHC artists created an improvisatory “loop”, a la Improv Everywhere.
As guests dined in the catering tent, they might have noticed the reccurring Coke explosion, toppling house of cups, arguments over recycling or “We Are the World” sung on repeat.
